As a mother of four boys, I’ve spent years watching the incredible curiosity children have about the natural world.

I’ve also watched how quickly that curiosity can become fear.

Many of the animals children are taught to avoid—snakes, spiders, scorpions, even rats—are often misunderstood. They’re introduced as something scary before children ever have the chance to appreciate them.

But I discovered something different.

By spending time with these remarkable creatures myself, I found personalities where others saw fear. Gentleness where others expected danger. Intelligence, curiosity, and trust hidden beneath unfair reputations.
